Use Comments to Gain Further Insight into Responses

Multiple choice questions are foundational to surveys. They allow you to get the information you need, and allow participants to share their feedback in a speedy way. Sometimes, you may want to ask participants to tell you why they chose a particular multiple choice answer. By enabling the Comments feature on multiple choice questions, you can customize a prompt to ask participants to offer more qualitative feedback on why they selected a particular answer. In today’s post, we’ll look at how to set it up.

First, you’ll want to create a survey.

Add your multiple choice question to your survey:

On the lower right hand of the multiple choice question, you’ll see an option for Comments. Check it:

Once you’ve enabled comments, you’ll see a prompt revealed. The defaults text says “Please help us understand why you selected this answer.” You can customize this prompt with your own text, as you see fit:

Now, when you’re ready to share your survey, you’ll see a your prompt, and a dialogue box after the multiple choice answer options that participants will use to tell you why they chose a particular answer:
